SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS (SPINS)
This is the standing SPINS for OP IRON SHIELD (ATRM)
Air-to-Air INSTRUCTIONS
###Definitions:
Friendly
A contact that is part of own coalition.
NEUTRAL:
A participant not part of the friendly or enemy side.
BOGEY:
A radar or visual air contact whose identity is unknown.
This means that a contact has occurred in “the middle of nothing” and does not give any
indications towards an identification. Requires a action from either C2 agency or pilots to upgrade the classification.
OUTLAW:
Informative call that a bogey has met point of origin criteria.
This means that if a contact originates from a known enemy area or airfield, they have
met the Outlaw critaeria
SPADES:
An interrogated group/radar contact which lacks all of the ATO (or
equivalent) IFF/SIF modes and codes required for the identification criteria.
If the reply comes back negative, the
contact is thereby considered Lack of Friendly, and qualify for SPADES.
HOSTILE:
A contact identified as an enemy upon which clearance to fire is
authorized IAW the theater rules of engagement (ROE).
This means that a contact has met all criteria authorizing engagement according to the
rules of engagement.
Identification criterias
Friendly indications
- IFF
- Following flightplan
- Communications
- Visually ID to friendly unit (Either visual observation or onboard sensors such as EO)
Positive enemy indications
- Lack of IFF (SPADES)
- RWR correlation to known enemy unit
- Visual ID to known enemy unit (Either visual observation or onboard sensors such as EO)
- Pattern/racetrack in known enemy territory
- Point of Origin at enemy airfield or enemy territory (OUTLAW)
- Conducting aerial refueling
Hostile Act / Hostile intention
- Locking up friendlies in order to engage
- Delivery of A-A or A-G munitions toward any friendlies (Sensors: EO, Visual, RWR)
- Maneuvering to obtain tactical advantage (HOT, with high speed)
Standard ID Matrix and Rules of Engagement (ROE)
FRIENDLY:
- 2 or more Friendly indicators
BOGEY:
- Lack of friendly indications and lack of enemy indications
BANDIT:
- Lack of Friendly indications AND 2x Positive enemy indications
HOSTILE:
- Hostile act/Hostile intention
- Lack of Friendly indications AND 4x Positive enemy indications
Weapons status
Weapons free:
- Cleared to engage on targets not identified as friendly or bogey ( Bandit and Hostile)
Weapons tight:
- Cleared to engage on targets positivly identified as hostile.
Weapons hold:
- Cleared to engage only in self-defense or in response to a formal order.
Default status
- Unless something else is briefed, the default status is weapons free.
Formal order
- Formal order is given as “ Commit group XXX, Time now XX:XX I authenticate XC (IAW TAT-101)
Self Defense
- Nothing in these ROE negates the right of individual self defense.
- Nothing in these ROE negates a pilots right to take all necessary and appropriate action in unit self defense.
